Day 26 of Marcel Lorenzoni's hunger strike, Eight of his friends
begin a hunger strike
He was joined the Church of San Roccu in Ajaccio. The eight
decided yesterday morning to cease eating as a show of solidarity
with Marcel Lorenzoni. All are supporting members of
Fratellenza, but their actions go beyond that of their imprisoned
friend. "Our purpose is to sensitize opinion in
Corsica, but also beyond the Mediterranean. Marcel
Lorenzoni was imprisoned for exploses found during a search of
the home of his former wife, which he had no longer
inhabited.
He denies ever having had these in
his possession. This search (and other searches) were
implemented after the assassination of the Prefect Erignac, yet
no connection has ever been proven. Our action goes beyond
the case of Marcel. We fight for all Corsicans imprisoned
within the framework of Section 14. We believe that keeping
persons inprisoned for months, without ever granting them a
hearing goes contrary to the most elementary principles of
respect for human rights." In fact, since the start of
his hunger strike, Marcel Lorenzoni has recieved numerous letters
of support. His friends are grateful on his behalf, for all
of those who have demonstrated their support. Thursday, for
the first time since his incarceration in the month of February,
he will be heard by the chief magistrate. Many are hopeful that
this will end the hunger strike. But members of
Fratellanza insist: "He wants to take it to the very
end. We are all very concerned for his health. Beyond
20 days, irreversible damage can be done to the body for it's
lack of food." In the meantime, there are eight more on a
hunger strike now in Ajaccio. For now, the atmosphere is
rather convivial. Many people have come to show their
support in the church square, and yesterday evening, a special
service was held in the church of San Roccu.
The hunger strikers are waiting for Thursday. They hope for
a positive outcome. They have announced that otherwise,
other protests will be start in other cities all over the island.
TO BE HEARD BY JUDGE
BRUGIERE
Marcel Lorenzoni will be heard on Thursday by the Chief Justice
John Louis Bruguière. It will be the first hearing and
cross-examination since his incarceration in Fresnes on 12
February. Put to test will be the charges of association with
criminals and the law pertaining to arms possessions.
Marcel Lorenzoni has protested that he has never been heard by a
judge since his incarceration to the prison of Fresnes on 13
February. He began his hunger strike on 30 April. Weakend
by the fast, he has lost more than 20 kg. The group
Fratellenza, whose members include his family and friends, will
give an evening press conference in Paris.
